Dulwich Festival 2014

I am exhibiting at Dulwich Festival. Those of you based in London will have received an invite to the exhibition and private view.

here are some of the paintings:

Homer

It is unusual for me to paint using green as it is my least favourite colour. Mondrian didn't like green either. The shapes have a cartoon playfulness.

 Sing

I have created spatial depth using strong zig zag lines. The viewer's eye is drawn into the depths.

Sky Blue Thinking

.....different sort of space in this one ..... the starting point was street style lettering

and it all came together

Painting is like a puzzle and for a painting to work sections have to slot together. There is a sense of resolution and completion.

In this title I am referring to the experience of painting. It has been suggested to me that I could have called this 'Heartbeat' with to the purple zig zag.

Creative practitioners came together to question the ideology of the studio and gallery space through a series of workshops, talks, discussions and critiques culminating in an exhibition of the collaborative work produced. Jaquinta took part in some workshops to make work on the theme of 'Language' and attended a panel discussion and a critique.

Peckham Space 2013

I am exhibiting in an exhibition at Peckham Space. Here is my painting:

tiger tiger burning bright
H 30cm x W 41cm
(H12" x W16")
acrylic on canvas

This painting is an interpretation of William Blake's poem 'Tyger! Tyger! burning bright'. The poem has an insistent automated rhythm and describes the process of creation in terms of manufacture. Its about the industrial revolution in the UK. Reading the poem I see the dark side of capitalism and the relentless pursuit of profit and growth. And to what end?

The zig zag horizontal lines and the tiger shaped band that run across the canvas come from the outline of signature graffiti. I have been looking at street art. doodleon.blogspot.co.uk The tiger is stylized, elongated and angular representing industrial strength and referencing the sharp angles of cubism and dynamic vortism.

On the left the vertical black and orange stripes represent industrial hazard markings and tiger's stripes. The small yellow circle is the moon in the 'forests of the night' whilst the larger red circle on the right refers to the emergence of China as an economic superpower. The zig zag vertical lines running across the canvas are suggestive of the lines on profit and loss charts and the constant beat of heartless capitalism.
